Winter Planter Inspo
In the depths of winter, a beautiful planter brimming with colourful foliage and flowers is a wonderful welcome home.
I’ll set the scene for you: It’s a gloomy winters’ day; the kind of day the sun hasn’t managed to break through the clouds at all. After sitting at your desk for hours staring at your computer screen, you wrap yourself up in your warmest coat and scarf hoping it’ll keep the biting cold away whilst you nip out to run your necessary errands. In and out of the car you dash as quickly as you can manage whilst gradually getting more damp from the drizzle that hasn’t let up all day. You finally pull up onto your driveway when you see the newest little flower in the planter you’ve stationed next to your front door. Pausing for a few precious moments to appreciate the colourful foliage and fresh blooms, a slight smile on your face as you finally step through your front door into the glowing warmth. You’re home.
Now is the perfect time to pot up your winter planter as it’ll all be done and blooming before the Christmas rush begins. Unsure of what to select? Here’s a few ideas for you…
Sunny Planter
For a sunnier spot, I decided to go for some amethyst and ivory tones. This planter has Euonymus, Purple Sage, Gaultheria, Festuca Grass, Ivy and Pansies. The white berries on the Gaultheria are a real stand out feature whilst the pansies will continue to flower for months. And if you find you need a few extra sage leaves for your turkey on Christmas day, you can snip some right out of your planter to add a homegrown element (and brag about it constantly to everyone around the table).
Shady Planter
For a shady spot, I’ve used a vintage galvanised tub with just four plants giving a mixture of foliage colour, texture and flowers. I decided a Berberis with warm foliage colour for height, a Muehlenbeckia for small dots of fresh green foliage to spill over gorgeous grey metal, a Hellebore with lime green flowers and a Heuchera with deep plum coloured wavy foliage filling the space.
